| Established in 1972, the Department of Translation of CUHK was the first of its kind in Asia. We offer a full range of BA, MA, MPhil and PhD programmes.
As a historic leader in translation studies, our department is dedicated to shaping the future of a discipline in transition. Building on our robust foundation in humanities research, we aim to pioneer new approaches at the intersection of language, culture, and technology. We are currently expanding our vision beyond traditional, practical translation training, with the goal of leading the global conversation on digital multilingualism and the cultural impact of emerging language technologies. We are seeking forward-thinking scholars who possess a strong foundation in humanities research and who have (or are highly motivated to develop) an active engagement with emerging technologies. We are particularly interested in candidates whose work critically engages with how language, technology, and society intersect. Relevant areas of expertise reflect this synthesis of humanities and technology, and include, but are not limited to: AI and translation and interpreting technologies; audiovisual translation and multimodal translation; localization; and multilingual digital communication. While priority will be given to the areas listed above, applicants in all areas of translation studies who demonstrate a commitment to integrating technology and culture into their research and teaching are welcome to apply. Applicants should (i) possess a PhD degree in translation or other related fields; (ii) have relevant teaching experience and professional qualification(s); and (iii) possess a strong track record in publishing research in the field. The appointees will be expected to (a) teach undergraduate and/or postgraduate courses; (b) develop new courses in line with their own interests; (c) supervise research postgraduate students; (d) develop independent and/or collaborative research projects; and (e) undertake administrative duties. A complete application dossier should include (a) a cover letter, indicating the rank and mode of appointment you are applying for; (b) a CV, with a complete list of publications (attach the acceptance letter for an accepted but unpublished paper); (c) a research statement; (d) a teaching statement; (e) two writing samples, published or unpublished; (f) previous teaching evaluations if any; and (g) applications for assistant professors should have three confidential reference letters to be sent by the referees directly; (h) associate professor applications should include three names of referees. Appointments will normally be made on contract basis for up to three years initially commencing August 2027, which, subject to mutual agreement, may lead to longer-term appointment or substantiation later.
